Matrosov Institute for System Dynamic and Control Theory of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISDCT SB RAS) (until 01.08.1997 – Irkutsk Computing Center) was founded on November 1, 1980 to develop mathematical methods of research and modeling of objects of different nature, methods of control theory and introduction of new information technologies in the East Siberian Branch of SB AS USSR. The Institute was founded on the basis of the Department of Systems Theory and Cybernetics at the Siberian Energy Institute of the SB AS USSR, organized in June 1975 with the initial goal of forming an independent scientific institute with the functions of a collective-use computing center.
The organizer of the Department and the first Director of the Institute (1980-1991) was Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (at that time – Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences) Vladimir Mefodievich Matrosov (1932-2011), whose scientific leadership and organizational talent determined the successful formation of the research team. From 1991 to 2006, the Director of the Institute was Dr. Stanislav Nikolaevich Vasiliev, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (now Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences). Currently, the Institute is headed by Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Igor Vyacheslavovich Bychkov.
The creation of the computing center corresponded to the concept of the USSR Academy of Sciences and the government to develop in the USSR a network of computing centers representing multidisciplinary institutes with powerful computing equipment for those times (the IrCC of SB AS USSR was equipped with two EC-1061 and two Elbrus-1-K2).
Since the foundation of the Institute, the scientific school of V.M. Matrosov on the method of vector Lyapunov functions (VFL) has been created and has become widely known in the country and abroad. The series of works “Lyapunov vector function method for stability analysis and other properties of nonlinear systems” (corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences V.M. Matrosov, Ph.D. L.Y. Anapolsky, Ph.D. S.N. Vasiliev, Ph.D. A.S. Zemlyakov, Ph.D. R.I. Kozlov) was awarded the USSR State Prize in Science and Technology in 1984.
At the same time, successful fundamental research in the field of asymptotic methods in mechanics is being carried out (supervised by Dr. A.N. Panchenkov, Dr. Yu. Orlov). In the subdivisions of Dr. E.I. Druzhinin, Dr. E.I. Druzhinin, Dr. R.I. Kozlov, Dr. G.M. Ruzhnikov, Dr. E.I. Somov, Dr. Yu. m.s. Y.F. Orlov, in accordance with the resolutions of decision-making bodies, fundamental and prospecting research is carried out for the development of advanced space and aviation equipment, the results of which are used in the design of the Luch, Ekran-M, Ekpress, Raduga-1, Gals, Express-A, Express-AM, Araks, and Resurs-DK spacecraft. A number of employees of these units were awarded prizes of the State Commission of the USSR Council of Ministers on Military-Industrial Issues and medals of the USSR Cosmonautics Federation. In the late 80s of the XX century, the Institute conducted large-scale research in the field of creating problem-oriented application program packages (supervised by O.G. Divakov, Ph.D., A.I. Tyatyushkin, Ph.D., G.A. Oparin, Ph.D., etc.).
The school founded by Academician V.M. Matrosov on the VFL method, already under the leadership of Academician S.N. Vasiliev continues to develop in the direction of creating effective mathematical, algorithmic and software support for the method of reductions in the dynamics of systems, S.N. Vasiliev created a new scientific school in the field of the theory of logical-dynamic systems and intelligent control.
The scientific school of A.A. Tolstonogov, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was the first in the world to construct the theory of differential inclusions with a non-convex right part in Banach space, to develop the theory of spaces of sets, sublinear operators with applications to problems of calculus of variations, optimal control, mechanics and others.
The scientific school of Dr. Y.E. Boyarintsev built a complete structural and qualitative theory of systems of differential-algebraic equations with applications to the study of dynamic properties and mathematical models of processes in electrical engineering, chemical kinetics, hydrodynamics, heat engineering.
The leading scientific school of RAS academician I.V. Bychkov, supported by a grant from the President of the Russian Federation, has developed methods, language means, technologies and tools for automating the creation of information and geoinformation systems, automation of data presentation and intelligent processing, technologies for creating a complex information and telecommunication infrastructure. The obtained scientific results are realized in large interdisciplinary projects of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and in information and analytical systems for public authorities and local governments. In 2012, members of the scientific school were awarded the Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation in the field of science and technology for the creation of information and telecommunication infrastructure of interdisciplinary scientific research as a basis for economic and social development of the eastern regions of Russia.
The scientific school of Dr. A.S. Strekalovskii built the theory of global search in nonconvex optimization and optimal control problems arising in modeling dynamic control processes in space, military applications, economics, energy, engineering, and ecology.
The scientific school of Dr. G.A. Oparin has developed new methods of knowledge engineering, conceptual, proof, large-block, multi-agent and service-oriented programming, which together form the theoretical basis of a unified technology for building modular systems (SATURN-technology).
